Due to its location (on the border between Lombardy and Veneto), the municipality of Castel D’Ario represents an important crossroads, where management and monitoring of traffic are essential to ensure the safety of citizens by identifying any unlawful movements.
At the same time, the heavy flow of vehicles has understandably raised concerns among the local population due to its potential environmental impact; furthermore, recent plans regarding the construction of a major car fluff landfill in a neighboring area, which would become one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe.
In order to address these needs, we proposed an expansion of the municipal plate recognition system with cameras equipped with integrated context cameras. This aims not only to strengthen traffic monitoring but also to serve as a video surveillance system in a critical area of the municipal territory. Secondly, to monitor pollution levels, we proposed the installation of an air quality monitoring station, which will allow for the tracking of particulate emissions (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) as well as two gases strongly associated with vehicle emissions: nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).
To maximize the benefits of these two systems, we have also ensured that they operate in an integrated manner: thanks to the management system, users can not only access both the camera and station data through a single application, but also correlate them to understand how the aforementioned issues affect the air quality within the municipality.
Ideally, the system will provide the administration with valuable information to implement policies for better traffic management and the well-being of citizens, while simultaneously giving insights for addressing potential issues.
