Solartron Sensors: Numerous Applications

Solartron sensors are widely used in civil engineering for the construction, testing, and maintenance of buildings and structures. Precision measurement sensors, displacement sensors, and transducers play a key role in providing the data that underpin these processes. All residential, public, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures – such as apartment blocks, hotels, bridges, dams, and roads – must be fit for purpose. Although designed to last for decades without failure, they can deform due to wind, earthquakes, ground movement, and other factors. To prevent structural failure, it is essential to monitor any displacements or deformations over time, even at a sub-micron level.

LVDT technology plays a crucial role in achieving and maintaining safety standards and avoiding catastrophic structural failures. It helps in understanding the properties, movements, and limits of natural and construction materials and ensures that buildings and structures comply with current regulations and meet the required technical specifications.

LVDT systems are used to:

  • Detect the mechanical properties of soil and rock at civil engineering sites prior to construction, and to perform laboratory testing on new materials.

  • Carry out deformation tests on a structure during the construction phase and throughout the building’s life cycle, detecting movements and potential failure points.

  • Test aggregates and asphalt in applications involving small displacements under stress, to monitor and measure material behavior.

  • Verify the properties of concrete to ensure compliance and fully understand its mechanical capabilities.

  • Perform hardness tests, measure the density of construction materials – such as carbon steel, alloy steel, and non-ferrous metals – and monitor physical displacements during construction and throughout the structure’s service life.
